Our Great Circle of Peace: Wampum Record of the Iroquois/Hodenosaunee Confederacy

Mr. Edward Bellomo, Principal, Ms. Susan D'Andrilli, Fourth Grade Teacher, and Ms. Angela Desmond, Teaching Assistant, join their students to honor the fourth graders' Great Circle of Peace. Like the Six Nations of the Hodenosaunee Confederacy, fourth graders united and became one community of learners. Through learning about the origins of the Six Nations of the Hodenosaunee Confederacy, fourth graders looked within themselves and thought deeply how they build peace within their families, their school and classroom community, and the larger community in which they live. Modeled after the Six Nations of the Hodenosaunee Confederacy the students created their own "wampum record" of their very own peace promises recited at their Great Council, held within their classroom during their Iroquois social studies unit of study.

Ms. D'Andrilli's Fourth Graders, inspired by the exuberant art lens of Faith Ringgold’s story quilts, recorded the living stories of America’s past African-American heroes onto this, their history quilt.
